Choosing bathroom tile can be daunting. Tile is an investment and no doubt you feel pressured to make the right choice. Here's 5 things to consider when choosing your tile:
1. How is the lighting in your space?
If your bathroom lacks natural light, your tile selection could help make the room feel brighter. A lighter tile with a little bit of a sheen can bounce light, giving the appearance of an airy space. If you have plenty of natural light, you can get away with darker or matte tiles.
2. What are your maintenance needs?
If you want a tile that requires less maintenance over time, choose a ceramic or porcelain tile. Besides being able to withstand years of use, these two tile options require little to no maintenance. An option like natural stone, though beautiful, will require more maintenance and sealing over time. Decide what matters to you most so you'll be satisfied with the results.
3. Do you have plans to move eventually?
If you feel like your house is your forever-home then you have the freedom to design your bathroom to your tastes. If you think there is a chance you'll eventually sell your house, you may want to consider safer tile choices. A neutral color palette is a safe bet and it may best to consider classic tile sizes and shapes that will appeal to potential buyers.
4. Can you narrow your selections down to one show-stopper?
If you find that you are drawn to tiles boasting vibrant color or pattern, don't hesitate to get playful with your design. Your design will feel more cohesive and well-planned if you keep the coordinating tile simple and let your show-stopper do its job of standing out. As a rule of thumb, you should also limit your tile selections to no more than three styles.
5. What mood do you want to evoke?
If you feel overwhelmed by the number of tile styles available, take some time to consider how you want to feel in your new bathroom. Do you want your space to energize you? Consider bright colors. Do you want to create a spa-like atmosphere? Maybe you should look into water-hues. Do you want your space to be rustic and romantic? Natural stone and wood-like tile may be your best bet.
