1. Outdoor Furniture
Did you know you can paint outdoor cushions with latex paint? I know because of course I had to try when I had enough of my sun-faded set. Sometimes the best DIY projects come from a place of desperation.
First, I cleaned the fabric with a mild detergent and scrub brush. You can use one part paint to two parts fabric medium for a soft finish but I found I had the best coverage results when I used straight paint. The texture of the fabric was like vinyl, not at all uncomfortable or scratchy. You can use a sanding sponge to smooth out rough areas if need be.
The painted cushions stayed vibrant all summer and repelled water, which was a pleasant surprise after summer storms. So, if you spot a great outdoor patio set, don't let ugly fabric hold you back!
 | 2. Upholstered Furniture Speaking of painting fabric, you can use chalk paint to transform upholstered pieces like wingback chairs, parlor sofas and more. Thin the paint out with water (one part paint to two parts water is a good start) and use a paint brush to paint the fabric. It will take a few coats to cover (particularly if you have a bold pattern like the chair I did above) but you with some vision and elbow grease, you can transform a piece. |
I'm always on the hunt for lighting that I can repurpose. I got this semi-flushmount for a song and used wood bead Christmas garland that I spray painted to create a high-end looking light for my kids' room.
4. Outdated Kitchen TablesI snagged this table at a yard sale last year for $10. To get the weathered-beachy look I wanted, I used gray chalk paint on the legs with a coat of oak stain over top. I wiped the stain on with one rag and off with another to give it a "stain wash." I used the same technique on the top of the table except I used white chalk paint and weathered gray stain to create the look of a concrete tabletop. The possibilities are endless with these little, round tables!
5. Kitchen ChairsWe turned these old kitchen chairs into pretty, side-by-side swings for our front porch. It's a fun take on the traditional porch swing and we use this space so much now that we've added the swings.
